Cheap Ways To Keep Cool in the Summer

I thought I'd star a thread on favorite ways to help keep cool in the summer.

The best way to beat heat is to stop the heat from coming in the first place.

1.) Get a few Mylar emergency blankets and pin them up over your windows, either inside or outside. Mylar will reflect heat and sunlight much more efficiently than blinds and curtains. Walmart has them for $3 a piece, but I've also found them at my local dollar store for $1.50 a piece.

2.) Bamboo mats. You know, those straw mat things you use for laying in the sun. I can get these for $5 at Walgreens or Walmart, and I hang them in front of my sliding door. It blocks the sun from reaching my windows, but I can still get a cross breeze going.

3.) Close your windows at the hottest part of the day.

4.) Build a swamp cooler. You can build one of these for less than $25 bucks and they work pretty darned good and are easy to put together. There are a whole bunch of great DIY instructions if you Google it. Voila! Do it yourself air conditioning!

I can keep my 3rd floor apartment with the windows facing East/West at a constant 75 degrees when it's 90+ outside just by doing this. My apartment can get to 90 something degrees even when the weather is in the 70's if I don't!

What are some of your favorite ways to beat summer heat?

As a paroled drug offender told me, make sure not to hang up Mylar in your windows, unless you want the police busting down your door! Same with aluminum foil over the windows.

I don't get it. Why is that?

It makes it look like you're blocking out light in order to grow marijuana.

AHHHHHHHH, I see what you are saying!

Ok, I'll add a side note to folks that you can put the Mylar behind blinds. My apartment complex won't let me put up anything in the windows (they require uniformity around the complex), so I just put it behind the blinds and it still works well.

Is that your dog in your icon? He looks a lot like my boy!

She is TOO cute! I love long haired chi's. :)

Nobody knows what my guy is, but he could well have some chi in him.

I wouldn't be surprised. The proportions of his head and his white pattern are very chihuahua-y. :)
